The Associate of Applied Science in Chemical Dependency Counseling is designed to blend classroom instruction with real-world learning experiences. Students examine matters of professional ethics, major counseling theories and principles, psychopharmacology and chemical dependency in individuals, families, groups and communities.
Graduates of this program will emerge fully prepared to pursue licensure and work opportunities in various settings including the following:
- Inpatient addiction treatment facilities
- Outpatient treatment programs
- Jails, prisons and juvenile detention centers
- Social work agencies
- Human services organizations
Graduates of the program will be able to:
- Demonstrate and implement knowledge of counseling theories and techniques to diverse populations
- Demonstrate and apply addiction theories to the clinical setting
- Maintain professional standards and ethical boundaries
- Gather clinical information to assess and support diagnosis and ongoing treatment
- Practice respectful communication and interpersonal awareness
- Collaborate with community support and prevention services
Admission to the Chemical Dependency Counseling Program is awarded on a selective basis, with preference given to the most qualified candidates. You will need to complete all requirements listed on the online application prior to the published deadline. The Selection Committee considers the applicant's grade point average or GED scores, documentation of successful completion of prerequisites, an interview, and a background check.
