All students at WSCO are expected to demonstrate Satisfactory Academic Progress, which requires a grade point average (GPA) above 2.0.
Academic probation is a way for the college to let you know that your grades are not satisfactory and to provide you with an opportunity to improve them.
Students are placed on academic probation status when their semester grade point average or cumulative GPA falls below 2.00.
If you have been placed on academic probation, you will be given one academic semester to improve your GPA and be released from probation. If your GPA is at or above 2.0 at the end of the semester, you will be removed from probation.
You may be allowed to continue the probationary period if you earn a 2.0 GPA each semester until your cumulative GPA is at or above 2.0. You will be notified at the end of each semester if you are allowed to continue probation.
When you are having academic difficulties, it is important to ask for help.
Students who are placed on probation are required to schedule an appointment with their faculty advisor or a success coach to discuss future scheduling. The advisor/coach will help you create a plan to improve your grades and help you get back into good standing. This may include tutoring, learning how to improve your study skills, or tips for better test taking strategies.
You will also need to communicate with the Financial Aid Office, since academic probation can impact your eligibility to continue to receive federal funds for your education.
If your grades do not improve, you can lose your funding, and even be dismissed from school. If you are dismissed from school, you have the option to file an appeal through the Academic Appeals Policy. You may also have the option to return to school under probation after taking at least one semester off.
Academic Appeals Policy - The student will be dismissed if a cumulative GPA of 2.0 is not achieved after three consecutive semesters on academic probation. After one semester of academic dismissal, the student may reapply to the college. A student who is readmitted to the college after academic dismissal will be placed on academic probation. The student must also reapply and be readmitted into specific programs, such as those in the health sciences division. A student who receives a notification of academic dismissal may submit an appeal through an Academic Appeals Policy. A student who has been dismissed two times for academic deficiency shall not be readmitted to Washington State College of Ohio for a three-year period.
