MARIETTA, OH (Feb. 2, 2017)—Being selected as February Student of the Month at Washington State College of Ohio (WSCO) isn’t high school senior Brittany Martin’s first recognition for doing more than expected. Her hard work and dedication in the classroom will culminate this spring when she receives two associate degrees from WSCO at the same time she graduates from high school.
The Frontier High School Student has a long standing tradition of pushing herself to achieve more. In junior high she started taking high school classes, so it seemed only logical that in high school she’d want to take college courses. Fortunately for her, Ohio’s early college credit program, College Credit Plus (CCP), provided her with just such an opportunity.
While Martin is an academic over-achiever, she admits that attending college as a high school student isn’t easy especially since she also maintains a part-time job. “The demand of college coursework is definitely a challenge,” she conceded. “It takes a lot of time and responsibility to stay on top of your classes.”
Laura Garcia, Associate Professor of Speech at WSCO, found Martin to be a joy to have in her classroom. “Brittany is an energetic and enthusiastic student and a great mentor of other students.” But it was more than her academic performance that secured her this recognition as Martin has also been actively involved in campus life.
In addition to her extraordinary academic performance at WSCO, Martin is on the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and on the varsity volleyball team at her high school. She also serves as a WSCO Student Ambassador.
“Brittany is an impressive student, who’s very engaged in what’s going on here at WSCO” said Deborah Gurtis Early College Coordinator and Martin’s academic advisor. “She is involved in several extracurricular activities on campus, including serving as Student Ambassador, helping with special events, serving as a tour guide during CCP visits, assisting with registration and more. She’s an outstanding student with a work ethic that will surely bring her much success,” Gurtis boasted.
Martin mused over her academic achievements as this spring she will earn degrees in liberal arts and general science transfer in addition to her high school diploma. “I’m a high school student graduating with two associate degrees from college and I feel that’s a huge accomplishment,” Martin proclaimed. Following graduation she plans to attend Marietta College and major in Petroleum Geology.
