MARIETTA, OH (Oct. 25, 2018 ) — The Evergreen Arts & Humanities Series at Washington State College of Ohio (WSCO) in collaboration with the Schwendeman Agency, Inc. announce an upcoming presentation of “Vila Boa and Other Tales: A Guitar Recital” with Júlio Ribeiro Alves. This event is sponsored in part by the Ohio Art Council.
Dr. Alves will perform on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. in Graham Auditorium on the campus of Washington State College of Ohio. Admission is free and will not require tickets or reservations, however, seating will be on a first come, first serve basis.
A Marshall University School of Music faculty member, Alves holds a Doctor of Music degree in Guitar Performance and Music Literature from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, a Master of Music degree in Guitar Performance from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Guitar Performance from the University of Brasília (UnB), in his native country, Brazil.
At Marshall, Alves is responsible for overseeing the guitar area teaching applied lessons, guitar literature, guitar pedagogy, guitar techniques, fretboard harmony, and directing the M.U. Guitar Ensemble. Outside of the guitar area, he also teaches music styles, music theory, and aural skills. He regularly performs as a solo player, as a member of the Violauta Duo, the Duo Alves, and in other chamber music settings. His programs feature music from various ethnicities and historical periods. He has performed in diverse venues in countries such as Brazil, USA, Costa Rica, Spain, and Italy.
The first part of program to be featured in the Evergreen Arts & Humanities Series includes works by composers Giorgio Signorile (Italy), Dilermando Reis (Brazil), Chiquinha Gonzaga (Brazil), Jorge Morel (Argentina), Jaime Zenamon (Bolivia), and the piece Nana Suite, composed by Alves himself during the 1990’s when he was experimenting with the use of scordatura (different tunings) during his undergraduate studies at the University of Brasilia. Guest artists Cynthia Pulls (cello) and David Pulls (violin) will join Alves on stage during the second part of the program.
Dr. Alves shared his love for music by saying, “To me, music is meant to be shared. The act of performing always amazes me: the same time in which it totally exposes my human condition in front of an audience it also enables me to express a multitude of emotions by channeling the energy ignited by the adrenaline into a game of enjoyment and fulfillment through sounds and silences. Above all…to play is fun.”
The Evergreen Arts & Humanities Series was established in 1998 to bring free and low-cost educational, cultural and entertainment programming to the community.
