MARIETTA, OHIO (April 5, 2018)–Dana McClead loves off-road racing on his four-wheeler. It’s a passion that ultimately led him to the Industrial Technology program at Washington State College of Ohio. And whether it’s on the race track or in the classroom, he’s giving everything he has, which is why he’s being recognized as WSCO’s April Student of the Month.
An avid racer in the Grand National Cross Country as well as a local racing circuit, McClead credits racing with his decision to pursue a degree in Industrial Technology. “Four-wheeling is doing a lot of fixing and you’re out there doing it yourself. And with machining it’s the same thing—no one else is going to do it for you.”
College wasn’t McClead’s first stop after high school. In fact, before he enrolled, he had a union job, but the uncertainty of regular work made him reevaluate his life. “I needed to make a better life for myself,” he admitted. “And I wanted a degree so I could get a reliable job.”
Industrial Technology instructor Chris Carpenter has had McClead in several courses and recognizes that his student has a promising future. “He’s a dedicated and hardworking student who excels at whatever task he encounters, a characteristic that employers are constantly seeking,” explained Carpenter. “Dana is able to grasp complex concepts and help other students understand.”
McClead credits his success in the classroom to doing what he loves, “I like the classes that I am in. I am more of a hands-on learner, so the classes in my program are right up my alley,” acknowledged McClead. “I try and do my best because my goal is to get a good job when I graduate.”
This fall, McClead will graduate with an Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Technology. Following graduation, he plans to find employment in the Mid-Ohio Valley.
