MARIETTA, OHIO (May 9, 2018)– Washington State College of Ohio is honored to announce State Representative Andy Thompson as the guest speaker at Saturday’s commencement ceremonies.
Representative Thompson is a Marietta businessman who has, for the past eight years, served in the Ohio House of Representatives, currently in the 95th District. During his four terms, he has consistently advocated for WSCO. He has championed the institution as a vital entity in the region. He has been unwavering in his stance that Washington State serves the critical education and workforce needs of the Mid-Ohio Valley.
“We offer many thanks to Representative Thompson for all that he has done for our community and the College,” said WSCO President Dr. Vicky Wood. “Inviting him to speak to our graduates is an opportunity for us to extend our appreciation for his support of the community college mission. We are thankful we have an advocate who recognizes that education is essential to our community’s prosperity. ” she continued.
Thompson’s efforts have positively impacted the quality of education Washington State provides. During his terms in office, the College credits his advocacy with several legislative successes including an increase in its share of capital funds and the shift to allow community colleges to offer a baccalaureate degree. In addition, Thompson supported the Regionally Aligned Priorities in Delivering Skills grant that resulted in WSCO receiving nearly $250,000 toward the establishment of its advanced manufacturing training lab.
Thompson, who holds degrees in political science and Spanish from Central College in Pella, Iowa, serves as the co-publisher and Director of Sales of his family’s Marietta, Ohio-based business, Bird Watcher’s Digest.
