MARIETTA, OH—Washington State College of Ohio (WSCO) is set to expand its online degree programs. In August, the college will begin classes for an Online Business Management Degree. The new program will provide students the opportunity to earn an advanced degree, in not only one of the most popular online degree programs in the country, but it’s also one of the most valuable, as graduates are very desirable in the local job market.
Online classes, sometimes called distance learning, are a growing trend. In fact, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, more than 25% of students are taking some form of an online course. And it is believed that the trend will increase to at least 50% by 2019, with Business being among the top degree choices.
“WSCO prides itself on its responsiveness to the needs of the community, and it became apparent from area job openings as well as input from its academic advisory committees, that an online business degree was in the best interest of our citizens and our area businesses,” said Dr. Bradley Ebersole, WSCO President.
The desirability of a business degree lies in its versatility said Brenda Kornmiller, Dean of WSCO’s Business, Engineering, Industrial Technologies and Workforce Development. “A business degree opens doors to a variety of careers,” she explained. Positions such as Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, and Advertising can all stem from a business degree. Forecasts, such as those found on OhioMeansJobs.com, indicate there are strong opportunities for gainful employment opportunities in the Mid-Ohio Valley region for these types of positions, both now and in the future.
“The job opportunities are there,” said Ebersole, “but it’s hard for people to fit school into their busy schedules. It’s the lack of a degree that’s limiting their careers.” Online classes eliminate some major obstacles for students who want to earn a college degree—most importantly, scheduling. Students enjoy the flexibility of logging into class on a schedule that fits their lifestyle. So, for the person juggling a busy calendar, family, and work commitments, online classes allows them to meet those demands and still earn their degree.
WSCO’s online business program will be spearheaded by Professor Brad Merritt and Assistant Professor Elizabeth Ruth. While their classrooms will be virtual, the interactions between student and educator are very real. Those enrolled in the program can expect the teachers to be highly involved with quick responses. “Our students will create a community by actively participating with their instructors and classmates in the forums. Not only do they learn from the class materials but also from each other,” Kornmiller acknowledged.
Enrollment is currently open with classes set to begin in August. The degree is designed in such a way that students can complete the program exclusively online in just two short years while providing them the flexibility they need to balance work, family and other outside commitments. The Business Management program joins two other existing online degrees as WSCO, Chemical Operator and Liberal Arts Transfer.
