MARIETTA, OHIO — Washington State College of Ohio (WSCO) announced that 10 corrections officers from area agencies recently completed the Ohio Corrections Officer Basic Training Academy. The course, certified by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission, included 148 hours of training in seven subject areas required for certification to be employed as Corrections Officer in an Ohio facility.
Topics covered included Administration, Legal Issues, Jail Security, Human Relations, Medical Overview, Subject Control Techniques, and First Aid. The local agencies saved critical funding dollars by participating in this regional training at Washington State compared to sending officers to other areas of the state for training. The course is required under Ohio Revised Code for jail staff that has been recently employed in Ohio.
The officers participating in the training represented correctional facilities from:
Washington County Sherriff’s Office: David L. Brasie III, Joseph R. Citterill, Dustin H Llyod, Christopher J. Martin, and Dustie L Porter.
From Belmont County Sheriff’s Office: Trent G. Dunaway, and Dianna L. Tidmore.
From Monroe County Sheriff’s Office: Jehvonn E. Crowe, Aleah S. Day, and Devin D. Nalley.
Enrollment in the academy is restricted to employees of an Ohio sheriff’s department.
Graduates are now eligible to take the Ohio Corrections Officer certification exam.
In addition to the Corrections Academy, WSCO also offers the Peace Officer Basic Academy (POBA), the required training for anyone interested in employment as a law enforcement professional in Ohio. The college is currently accepting applications for the academy that will begin on August 15. Classes will run during the day Monday through Friday with some weekends and will span through December. Students who enroll in the academy are eligible to apply for a short-term certificate grant valued up to $2,000. The funds will be awarded to those impacted by COVID-19 with financial need.
The first point of entry into the academy is passing the state-mandated physical training test. Test dates are slated for May 7 at 9 a.m., May 15 at 5 p.m., May 28 at 9 a.m., June 18 at 9 a.m., and June 25 at 9 a.m. All tests are administered at the Williamstown High School track.
